Michael Hsu Office of Architecture : ATX Cocina

In Austin, Texas, the Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, a Texas-based agency, is completely restructuring a former single-storey commercial space to offer Mexican restaurant ATX Cocina a unique interior. Covered with vaults in pine wood, the establishment offers two contrasting atmospheres, one curvaceous, the other all in lines.

Located on the ground floor of a contemporary residential building, this former 20 9 shop, had from the outset a longitudinal façade on the street, entirely glazed, that could not be modified because of the urban plan of the city.

To highlight this important source of light in a plural way, Michael Hsu, master builder and designer, decided to create two spaces arranged in a row, with distinct atmospheres, characterized by the different shape and color of their pine ceiling: one dark and arched, the other clear and semi-curved.

The first zone, with its slightly curved ceiling and its length, is segmented by glazed steel windows in light green. Dressed in pastel colored furniture, it inspires tranquility.

The second, warmer, at the back of the restaurant, where there are black marble tables and high metal chairs of the same color, is open to the kitchens. The grooves and angles of the wood used in coating are magnified by neons unfurling beneath the transoms on which the arches rest, increasing the impression of perspective.

A place where the heat is not only on the plates but also in the architecture!
